BBC “Midnight Musicology”

Dr Bennett appears weekly as BBC 5 Live’s Resident Musicologist, analysing popular songs and discussing pop music history, songwriting, & music production.

Midnight Musicology is a late-night walk through the science, soul and stories behind the songs we love. Every Tuesday (midnight UK time, and archived on YouTube, Joe Bennett “Dr Beat” joins the BBC live from Boston to explore a new musical theme — and a curated playlist that spans the decades, from 1950s classics to present-day chart-breakers.

Each episode explores a specific idea – an instrument, songwriting technique, location, lyric theme, or technology that has been used across pop music history. Prof Joe illustrates the examples live with audio clips, mix breakdowns, and live guitar parts.

Alongside the main theme, every show features:

THE QUIZ
A weekly musical brain-teaser tied to the theme. Can you guess the mystery songs from the clues and messed-up audio clips?

SOUNDSLIKE
Listeners text in to suggest examples of songs that sound like other songs, and Prof Joe analyses the similarity, exploring the possible explanations — accidental coincidence, influence chain, or licensed sample/interpolation? (Unsurprisingly, this is his favourite segment).

Expect sharp musical insight, genuine nerdiness, and a celebration of popular music in all its forms — from obscure Scandinavian psych-rock to platinum-selling global bangers.

UK listeners can text the show with Soundslike suggestions on 85058 or WhatsApp 08085 909693.
