    ESC 2023 logoWelcome to the Eurovision live musicology blog, now in its 12th year. For context, here’s the 2020 10-year corpus research summary, and the archive of all the posts in reverse order.

    Tonight I’m pleased to welcome co-researcher (and current Berklee student) Rafi Waters, who has done a terrific job working on the BPMs, chord loops, and contextual research.

    As always, I’ve provided commentary on each song, so you can follow along with the show, or (later) watch the embedded videos. And I’m going to try to predict the winner, before voting begins, then leave the prediction up here for posterity when the votes are in.

    Desperate, the artist considered calling a doctor or an exorcist, but they soon realised that there was no escaping Poe’s grasp. As they struggled to comprehend their strange new reality, they could only repeat the ghost’s name over and over again: “Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe.”

    And yet, even as they were consumed by fear and uncertainty, the artist could not help but feel a glimmer of hope. For despite the chaos that Poe had wrought in their life, there was a sense that something special was happening. “Oh, mio padre,” they sang, “there’s a ghost in my body,” and in that moment, they knew that they were on the cusp of greatness.

    For though they could not explain the mystery of Edgar Allan Poe, they knew that his presence within them was a gift. And as they sang his words and felt the power of his genius coursing through their veins, they could not help but wonder what other wonders lay ahead.

    “Who the hell is Edgar?” the artist’s companion had asked. And now, as the artist gazed out at the moonlit world, they knew the answer. Edgar Allan Poe was a ghost, a legend, a master of words. And in that moment, the artist knew that they would never be the same again.

    I love this lyric more than words can say – it should have Cliffs Notes. It’s a ghost story, a tale of ambition (the narrator’s desire to succeed), a lament of philistinism (the title, spoken in a California-vocal-fry style by a less literate character), a joke about Eurovision multi-lingual pandering (“Oh, mio padre”) a satire on music industry administrative meddling (“what’s your IPI? Where’s the A&R?”), a critique of streaming services’ payments to artists (“Zero dot zero zero three” is the approximate amount per stream a songwriter receives from Spotify, which buys you “Gas station champagne”).  Bravo. Far too weird to win Eurovision, but my personal favourite of the 26 finalists.

    Portugal’s Mimicat provides this polka/klezmer/cossack song of heartbreak and longing. It starts off relatively stable with an attention-grabbing C#7 (V7) rippling piano arpeggio, perhaps setting up the I-Will-Survive-in-reverse lyric sentiment that is to come. The ‘Ai Coração’ title (“Oh, heart!”) adds one more repeat each time into the intro of each chorus, as the arrangement gets busier, louder, and more chaotic, while the narrator becomes ever more frantic. Just in case you were unconvinced of the sincerity of the Cossack influence, at 2 minutes in you get a balalaika breakdown – two words that rarely appear adjacently in popular musicology, still less Portuguese popular musicology. Feels like it has an accel, but that’s just the oom-pah of the root-5th bassline combined with the full-on 145 BPM tempo. Mimitcat is a spirited performer, and she inhabits the character and the song brilliantly. I loved it, but it’s not poppy enough to place in the top five.

    An earnest anti-war song, in the character of the universal soldier. Debatably 138 or 69 BPM, depending on how you feel the beat. The chorus melody owes a lot to Passenger’s Let Her Go. It’s arguably in B major, but spends most of its time avoiding landing on that home chord, starting each pre-chorus and chorus on the IV chord of E, and preferring the more tragic G#m vi chord  for the start of the verses and the dynamic peak of the chorus. There’s a lovely D# V chord at 2:40, implying harmonic minor and giving us an oh-so-brief break from Eurovision’s relentless use of the Aeolian mode to denote ethnic authenticity or emotional depth as required. A deserved finalist, but not a winner.

    The Animals’ Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood meets Rixton’s Me and My Broken Heart, as arranged by Ace of Base. This is the kind of song that mid-2010s Eurovision was adding a reggaeton/dembow beat to, and it looks like the fashion is drifting back to 90s pop-reggae (it was a simpler time). The rising-5th hook “Solo, solo” works well, and probably wins tonight’s prize for most titles in three minutes (17). It’s ridiculously catchy, not least because its 4-chord loop never varies – although it does, interestingly, switch between Aeolian mode and harmonic minor every time, thanks to that major V F# chord at the end of bar 4. Fun!

    Ouch. That intro hook melody actually hurts. What’s your favourite other song that goes E-C-Amaj7 and leans on the major third throughout? Thought not. The F natural in bar 4 is sort of Spanish Phrygian (there’s a lot of it about this year), and I guess it conjures the emo-vampire-transformers vibe they are going for, but in the chorus, with that big drone and the relentless major 3rd G#, it just feels like dissonance for no reason. I suspect the producer might have agreed, because the electro-pop verses and outro stay away from the clashing notes, giving us a perfectly serviceable loop that carries the second half of the song. The lyric is purportedly about video games, but in this apocalyptic arrangement comes across as deep and meaningless. Co-researcher Rafi fears that “the dark lyrics may be preventing it from appearing on EA’s FIFA 24 soundtrack”. I agree – can’t see anyone chanting this one from the stands (or the couch).

    Piaf plays Chic! The French love to throw chanson at Eurovision, and if you take away the Bernie Edwards popping bassline and Stars-on-45 generic disco beat, this is pure tragedy all the way. You gotta feel for the poor woman: “Le temps est assassin / Je cherche l’amour / Je n’trouve rien / Comme dans mon sac à main” (Time is a killer / I look for love / I find none / [just as I find no love] in my purse). The C#m and E chords are structurally interchangeable, but they usefully give the bassline extra interest, and stop the song from sounding too disco-loop boring. The bridge’s rise to Emaj7 and then D#/G (yeah yeah, key-signature hairsplitters, D#/F##, but what guitarist wants to read that?) gives us a wonderful ascent to the dynamic peak of “À chanter la Grande France” (“to sing to the great France”). It’s bold, confident, brilliantly done, and probably doomed. Eurovision hardly ever buys chanson, even when it’s wearing sequins.

    The Cypriots successfully pass off this tragic ballad as danceable anthem-pop by adding a cunning 24-beat shuffle groove. The harmony and melody make a subtle nod to Netherlands’ 2019 Eurovision winner Arcade. Lyrically, it’s a classic recovery-with-dignity theme that perhaps stays the ride side of giving stalker vibes (in the promo video he seems to be keeping his heartbreak to himself in an abandoned greenhouse). I love the triplet scansion at the end of verse 1 “I miss your kiss, gasoline and a matchstick / Red lights, flashes, rising out of the ashes”. Big fat synth and string pads in the production provide great texture for the falsetto hook on the outro. It’ll do great in the arena if he can keep it in tune all the way up there.

    [C Spanish Phrygian tonality]

    To use Gen-Z’s most overexposed phrase, “I feel like” it would be inappropriate to put guitar chords here, because this is just not a chord driven. This wonderful Spanish Phrygian journey (aka Phrygian Dominant) feels super authentic, despite the electro production. Lyrically, it’s a sort of lullaby conversation between grandmother and granddaughter, with Spanish cultural references aplenty (here’s the excellent Wiwibloggs page about the song). The tight block harmonies spell out the flamenco harmonic lineage throughout (broadly, C-Eb-Db is the implicit loop). It’s wonderfully produced and sung. Spain keepin’ it real!

    The Swedes have done it again. Regular readers of this blog will know that I rarely place Sweden outside the top three, and while my prediction of Tattoo as 2023’s winner is… predictable, what else can an evidence-based musicologist do? Loreen is clearly trying to emulate the success of 2012’s winning song “Euphoria”, with many of the same production ideas. The chorus melody hook has a character of its own, though, with the millennial-whoop three syllable major-third-to-fifth “tattoo-hoo-hoo” in contrast to the earlier song’s long-voweled four-syllable “Eu-phooooo-ri-aaaaa”.

    There are lots of pop tricks in here to make you fall in love with the song. The verse melody is the same as the chorus melody, but an octave lower, so when you hear the chorus for the first time, your subconscious says “ooooh, I know this one”. The sleight of hand is disguised by an 8-bar pre-chorus with a different and more static melody, so you don’t know you’ve been had. The chord loop itself is the harmonic equivalent of the Shepard Tone illusion, in that we perceive endlessly rising chords – vi-I-ii-IV. It’s a loop that never ends, with the final IV leading inexorably to the next vi. At 150 BPM it’s one of the fastest songs in the auditorium tonight, so while it’s just about possible that Sweden has overshot the danceability here, I still think this one is another banger for the ages.

    Albina from Albania provides this stirring story of a family’s struggle against adversity (poverty from war?). Instrumentally there’s some great stuff going on here. I love the unison [1:50 ish] between the metalhead guitar and the bouzouki (this being Albania, more likely a Šargija). It’s all beautifully crafted, in the song form, production, and vocal arranging. Just too sad for Eurovision.

    The romance languages are so wonderfully stacked with vowel-heavy words that songwriters can hammer syllable-heavy lines together and keep the vocal flowing nicely. Mengoni gets away with this admirably in the verses, giving him space to contrast this in the chorus and open up all the nostalgia and regret that long vowels do so well. It’s a tragic song of post-breakup loss and speculation – two lives, ever-diverging, with our narrator reaching out, unheard, to his lost love. “If this is the last

    Song and then the moon will burst / I will be there telling you that you’re making a mistake”. Like most relationship advice, it sounds better in Italian.

    Full disclosure. I was a judge for Estonia’s song selection, and pretty much all of us thought this one was the best of the bunch (although for me the zombies on hoverboards came a close second). It’s a likeable piano ballad, and Alika is a likeable performer. Musically it’s an extended/adapted 8-bar Andalusian cadence (Hit The Road Jack, All Along The Watchtower), which is fine for this sort of thing. For me, the bridge is the best bit, and the delicate ascending minor scale fragment that forms the start of each verse works particularly well in the drop before the final epic chorus. Sadly, I don’t think this is a winner (even though it was IMO the best that Estonia had to offer), but it’s not doomed to null points either.

    Bizarrely, this piece of in-your-face brutalist techno is tipped to do well. Can’t see Eurovision voters going for it en masse, but it’s very well done. Phrygian flat-2s are all the rage in pop, hip-hop and techno right now (e.g. Unholy). My co-researcher Rafi hears Peter Schilling’s Major Tom in the bassline; I hear ABBA’s Does Your Mother Know? (we are from different generations).  

    Just after the halfway point the song switches gear dramatically to a completely Eurovision-typical chorus with Drake-esque autotune for the “Cha cha cha” hooks. Hmmm… holding off on the chorus until almost two minutes in? It’s bold, nay, actually high risk. They should have asked themselves WWSD (what would Sweden do?). But it’s a hot favourite, and there are some countries that still love aggressive techno.  Yes, I mean you, Germany.

    My Sister’s Crown fools you into thinking it’s a one-chord song, and then bombards you with chord changes as it develops. The Em vamp underscores the narrator’s inclusively feminist #MeToo exposition. Lead singer Patrice has said “you can have support from other people and [on the subject of] equality, it’s not just between women, but [everyone]”. There are four languages here – English, Czech, Bulgarian and Ukrainian.

    Musically it’s typically Aeolian Eurovision fare, and much as I admire the inclusive politics in the lyric, I don’t think the chorus is strong enough to win (although I love the “we are not your dolls” verse hook).

    Have we got over chuckling that Australia is geographically about as far from Europe as it is possible to get? It was 2015, for goodness’ sake! And to be fair the Australians’ love for the ESC goes back to 1983, when they first started broadcasting it, or perhaps even earlier (famously in 1977 50,000 people came to see ABBA live in Sydney).

    This is unusually rocky for the Aussies. It starts off predictably enough, with a 2-note static verse, and gives us a lovely pop-metal Dorian mode chorus, before going full-on growl-metal for 8 bars at the halfway point. The band clearly love this bit, but they only get 8 bars of it, because singer Danny Estrin then takes centre stage again for the tuneful breakdown section (fun fact – when not rocking out Eurovision, he has a day job in a law firm). Songs like this get a big cheer in the arena on the night, but much as I wish there were more rock in Eurovision, not enough Europeans feel as I do (the Germans  will love it though).

    The lyrics tell the story of a (pagan?) wedding in the woods. There’s some very cool call and response in the chorus, repeating the title back, followed by a flute line whose “twiddliness” defies expectations. The 2-bar chorus melody hook is super memorable. It’s good, but not camp, tragic, or poppy enough to activate enough voters’ trigger fingers I suspect.

    Rafi has clocked this one at a super slow 78 BPM, and I agree with his interpretation, but like a lot of contemporary pop (particularly trap) you can count it as double time too – 156. There’s a lot of cool right-now production here (e.g. the slight J Dilla beat drum programming) but enough Eurovision-ness to please the continent, including a big dynamic peak and dramatic parallel octave strings on the outro. It’s not as strong as last year’s winner IMO, but as we know there is a lot of love and support for Ukraine in Europe right now, and this indomitable lyric will no doubt bring many voters together.

It’s a synthy-orchestral fast-12/8 four-on-the-floor beat for the most part, with the drums dropping in and out to create contrast. Listen out for Alessandra’s amazing whistle-voice top E at around 2:20 before the ramp up to the outro.     Another of my personal favourites; I heard this one on Spotify before I saw the video (and frankly, the video that played in my head had a LOT more unicorn head-dresses than the artist actually delivered tonight). It’s great – quirky, poppy, super economical, hook-filled, with an upbeat sentiment of self-assertion that Eurovision will love. Let’s just enjoy that “You wanna see me dance?” section, when the 16-groove gives way to a wonderfully disjointed triplet-y feel, which is the time signature the unicorns in my head use whenever they dance.

    Another minor key offering, though perhaps interesting for showcasing bVI (D) in different ways, starting with the i-bVI verse alternation. The pre-chorus features the distinctive 8-7-b7-6 bassline, while I like the way the eventual V chord (C sharp) eschews V-i in favour of a half-step to bVI that now starts the driving chorus sequence (as previewed in the mellow intro). As a disarming closing twist, the song ends on the brighter relative major, delivered as a melodic D-Dm7-A. And, of course, the rockin’ guitar solo was most welcome on the night!

    This is just fabulously weird. And I think the Croatians know it. It has all the camp, of course, and a song form and production that we might describe as ‘daring’. But this is the most potent anti-war (pro-Ukrainian) song tonight; the “Krokodilski psihopat” (“Alligator psychopath”) in the lyric is clearly Putin. Don’t be fooled by the silliness – this is Eurovision at its most political.

    Argh! I hate songs about songwriting! What are your favourite classic songs about songwriting? Bet it’s a short list. To be fair, this is a tale of empowerment after a break-up.
